Officials in Munich recently changed the city’s motto to “München mag dich,” or “Munich loves you.” Well, Munich, we love you, too.
The capital of Bavaria shines with fantastic museums, impressive palaces, and the coolest glockenspiel we’ve ever seen. On your etr exploration we’ll discover the lavish residences of the Dukes of Wittelsbach, take in the soaring spires of the Frauenkirche cathedral, and watch the clock in the Marienplatz tell history along with the time. Our look into the past continues at the Alte Pinakothek, which houses more than 800 European masterpieces. In the Deutsches Museum, science comes to life as we explore technology and innovation with a hands – on approach. And no time in Munich would be complete without a tasting local specialties at the Viktualienmarkt, a food market with an 800 year history. Prinzregententorte, anyone?
In the surrounding region, we hike up to the glorious, enchanting and clearly over the top, Neuschwanstein Castle, “Mad” King Ludwig’s fairy tale residence nestled in the Bavaria’s Allgäu Mountains and photo op since 1886. We can also make a somber visit to Dachau, the first concentration camp opened by Hitler’s Nazi government in 1933. Our time at the camp provides insight into the brutality of the Nazi’s and the stories of some of the innocent prisoners who lost their lives there. We also venture to famed Olympiastadion, built for the 1972 Olympics, where we can climb the across the iconic roof.
