etr Family Nepal Trek

etr family trek in nepal

etr family, our division devoted to intergenerational travel, operated a challenging Nepal Trek for the families and friends of speakers and presenters at the NESA Administrator’s Conference recently held in Kathmandu.

With the youngest participant just 14 years old and the oldest 68, our etr family group of 21 energetic trekkers headed off from Kathmandu for Pokhara, gateway to the famed Annapurna circuit. In Nayapul we met our crew of 24 experienced guides, porters and cooks, and ventured up the Modi Khola valley, through patchwork agricultural areas and dense, mossy forests. While passing rhododendron woodlands and making some gentle (and a few not so gentle) ascents and descents, we were provided tantalizing glimpses of the high mountains which make up the giant Annapurna Massif. From the first morning on, Machhapuchchhre, revered by the local population and known for its distinctive “fishtail” summit, was continuously in view.

As amazing as the physical landscapes were, many participants were also intrigued by the traditional culture as well as social practices of the local residents of the various Gurung, Magar and Brahmin villages we passed through. We also had the chance to explore a local school and visit with students and teachers.

Blessed with clear weather, our trek proceeded under unbelievably blue skies with just the slightest of breezes. Upon waking on day three, we were overwhelmed by the site across the northern horizon as the majestic peaks of the Annapurna Massif became visable. As noted by the participants, watching as dawn’s light brought the peaks into view made the arduous climb worthwhile. (Oh, and we won’t forget those hot showers.)

The great food, great camaraderie, great vistas (and more than a few laughs) made the physical challenge of this etr family venture into the Himalayan foothills so very rewarding. See for yourself with a quick peek at the program gallery.
