Prague, for decades hidden behind the Iron Curtain, has since been revealed as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, a dusty jewel awaiting your exploration.  This city on the Vlatava is divided into several parts: old town and new town on one side of the river, the mysterious quarter of Mala Strana on the other, and then the old castle, and St Vitus’s cathedral, from above.  The Charles Bridge connects the two sides, and seethes day and night with activity...
buskers, petty vendors and artists, tourists and locals, the life of a city square lived daily on an unusually lovely and evocative old bridge.  Yet, in all parts of Prague winding alleys and atmospheric medieval streets and squares combine to create an almost other-worldy effect.  One feels the ghosts of old Prague everywhere, not least in the ancient Jewish cemetery, whose gravestones are piled up on top of each other, a secluded pocket of quiet and contemplation in a generally secluded city; a city, indeed of ‘pockets.’

An etr Prague Adventure is a heady plunge into a city of great culture and sophistication, great charm and mystery, a programme which has been developed and refined since our first group at the time of the Velvet Revolution.  Are you ready to have us show you our Prague?

Did you know
  • The word "Czech" is an adjective and therefore should not be used as the abbreviated name of the country.
  • The world premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni took place in Prague on October 29, 1787
  • Former president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, liked to take visiting politicians to historic Prague pubs.   The central Prague brewery U Fleků was established in 1499 and still operates today.
  • The Czech Republic enjoys one highest density of castles in the world.
  • Tennis star Martina Navrátilová was born in Prague.
Prague proverb:
Hněv je špatný rádce.
Anger is a bad advisor.
Getting there:
Prague International Airport, located just 20 kilometers from Old Town Square, is served by 50 scheduled airlines offering mostly direct flights from uncountable destinations.  Rail service from many cities of Germany as well as from Vienna is fast and efficient.   Contact us for more specific information.
How long do you need for your Prague exploration?
Prague is an ideal student destination for a four night program allowing for three full days of exploration. However, many of our groups combine Prague with easily accessible destinations such as Krakow, Budapest or Vienna for perfect six or seven night programs.    Let us know more about your desired outcome of the tour and we are happy to outline different possibilities for you.
When to go
Truly, there really is no bad time to explore Prague. As the capital enjoys an agreeable climate from spring through fall, during this period the city is alive (and on weekends, teeming) with visitors. The winter, though often with snow and low temperatures, is a great time as crowds are rare and the pace allows for a more peaceful, and some would say, rewarding exploration. And don’t forget the historic Prague Christmas Market, which runs from late November to early January, is a special, and traditional, holiday treat.
Highlights
The Czech capital, located in the heart of central Europe, offers so much to our middle and high school groups that it is difficult to list all the highlights.  However, we’ve narrow it down to the following:
  • Marvel at the Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Rococo and Art Nouveau buildings and churches of Prague’s famous Old Town Square, Europe’s largest market in the 11th century.
  • Stroll across the oldest stone (and most photographed) bridge in Europe, Karlův most, also known as the Charles Bridge, and learn of Prague’s important role in trade over the centuries.
  • Gather at the famous Astronomical Clock when it strikes on the hour for a show performed for at least 600 years.
  • Put Soviet influence of the 20th century into perspective with a visit to the Communist Museum.
  • Enjoy the popular Czech dessert, palačinky, a thin pancake filled with ice cream, cream, fruit or jam.
  • Visit the intimate Alfons Mucha museum for insight into the most famous Czech art nouveau celebrity.
  • Ramble up to Strahov Monastery for wonderful views of the spires and rooftops of Prague.  After all, Prague is rightly known as the “City of a Thousand Spires”.
  • Appreciate Prague’s long association with classical music at an orchestral or choir performance in a nearby church.
  • Explore Hradcany and the many historic architectural jewels of the Prague castle complex.
  • Learn the history of Prague’s Jewish community with visits to synagogues, the museum and the atmospheric (and ancient) Jewish cemetery.
  • Absorb the atmosphere of Terezin, designed by Nazi leadership to be the ‘model’ concentration camp, and the role of the camp in WWII.
  • Get the best shot of the gothic (and oft photographed) Gun Powder Tower from along Hybernska.
  • Be immersed in the wonders of Art Nouveau design and architecture (and enjoy a coffee in the original period café) at the Municipal House.
  • Wander away from the tourist path of the Royal Mile while we explore the narrow lanes littered with local cafes, shops and surprises.
  • Explore variations of the traditional (and hearty) Czech cuisine.
  • Listen intently as our black cloaked guide relays spooky and scandalous tales of life in old Prague while leading us along narrow alleys and lanes on an evening ghost tour of Old Town.
